Protect your nails; prevent infections during manicures/pedicures
Summer is a time when your skin and your nails, be they on fingers or toes, are on full display. You may love manicures and/or pedicures, but you must take some precautions before heading to your salon, to prevent catching any fungal, bacterial, or viral infections.
Most nail salons follow strict hygiene guidelines, but look for the following when you visit one:
- Whether the nail technicians have the necessary experience and/or license
- Whether they wash their hands between clients
- Whether the workstations and tools look clean. You can ask the staff how and how often the equipment is cleaned
- Whether the footbaths and filters are disinfected
- If you want dark colors on your nails, make sure an extra layer of base coat is applied to prevent discoloration
- Know what products are used
- If you get manicures and pedicures often, consider buying and bringing your own tools
- Apply a quality moisturizer on your nails post-procedure to prevent dryness
If you want to shave your legs, do this at least 24 hours after the pedicure, not before.
