Sunscreen Basics to Protect Your Skin in the Summer

Now that summer is here; it is important to be increasingly aware of sunscreen usage. Revisiting the basics and making the right choices to protect yourself from the harsh summer sun can go a long way in preventing premature skin aging and even skin cancer over the long term.

Sunscreen Basics to Protect Skin at Skin & Vein Institute in Encinitas Area

The most important tip is to use a high SPF sunscreen. The higher the SPF up to 50, the better it is for you! In addition to a high SPF, it is also crucial for you to make sure it is broad spectrum. You must apply the right amount of sunscreen as well. About 1 teaspoon worth of sunscreen is needed to protect your entire face and don’t forget your neck and chest. Make sure to reapply once every two hours and if you are engaging in any water sport or if you are sweating. UPF clothing can also help protect your skin and covers a lot of area, perfect for golfing, fishing or any outdoor activity.

There are several different types of sunscreen formulations. If you have acne, make sure to look for non-comedogenic sunscreen. If you are into athletics, look for a sport sunscreen that is water resistant for up to 40 or 80 minutes. Also, consider using a sun-stick around the eyes and lips.
