WAVE GOODBYE TO MASKNE
According to the Collins Dictionary, maskne is “acne or a similar skin breakout caused by frequently wearing a face mask”. Although it is not a new word, it came into general parlance this year with the COVID-19 global outbreak. Also known as acne mechanica, maskne is caused by constant friction generated by the mask rubbing and grating against the skin. Additionally, the mask creates a hot humid microbiome around the mouth which creates a different environment for the skin.
Masks have become a necessary evil as much-needed protection from the Coronavirus. However, not everyone has taken to them well: Some experience breathing difficulties, discomfort, and acne breakouts as a result of wearing masks.
Preventing maskne – some precautions:
Make sure that you are not allergic to the material the mask is made of. Always wear a clean and dry mask. A disposable mask should only be worn once.
- Moisturize your skin before wearing the mask.
- Do not use any toner on the skin, toner strips the skin of its natural oils and causes your oil glands to go into overdrive.
- Wear as little makeup as possible as it can clog pores, aggravating acne breakouts.
- Clean the face with a gentle face wash or cleanser after taking the mask off.
- Wash reusable masks properly in solutions that won’t irritate the skin.
