The Benefits of Laser Vein Treatment for Varicose Veins

What are Varicose Veins?
Veins are responsible for returning the deoxygenated blood from the body’s tissues to the lungs where it is reoxygenated and returned to the heart. Through natural movement, the muscles in the body help pump that blood back to the lungs.Inside veins are valves that open and close to allow blood to flow in the correct direction. In varicose veins, these valves are broken, causing the blood to flow backward and become trapped in the feet. The veins expand, stretch and twist, preventing proper blood circulation.
Signs and Symptoms
Varicose veins are often easily identified by their blue/purple color and bulging appearance. They are most frequently found in the legs but can also appear in other body areas. Many patients are bothered by the appearance of varicose veins, and some even suffer from symptoms such as itching and pain. In some severe cases, patients may experience hardening of the veins, bleeding, or even skin ulcers.
What is Endovenous Laser Ablation?
Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy is a simple procedure that uses lasers, ultrasound, and catheters to treat varicose veins. During the treatment, a catheter is placed directly in the vein, and an ultrasound is used to guide the catheter through it. The laser is then placed through the catheter into the vein and the laser heats the walls of the vein, causing it to close and stop blood flow, rerouting the blood into the normal functioning circulation. During the healing process, circulation will improve since blood is no longer becoming trapped by the abnormal vein. Eventually, the vein will shrink and fade away.Benefits of EVLT
There are many benefits to choosing EVT treatment for varicose vein treatment:- Quick – The outpatient procedure typically takes about an hour
- Relatively painless – Requiring only one small incision

Following treatment, patients will be advised to wear compression socks to decrease bruising and swelling and aid proper circulation. A follow-up ultrasound about a week later can check to verify no clots have formed in the treated veins.
