IPL or ExcelV to treat sun damage
IPL or ExcelV can be used to treat red and brown spots manifested by sun damage on the face, neck, chest or backs of hands. IPL as a broad spectrum of light, cannot target anything specifically unlike ExcelV. Even though a single treatment of IPL is cheaper, ExcelV is less costly as only one or two treatments are needed for recovery.

What are the most common forms of sun damage?
Sun damage has many manifestations in the skin. Two of the most common forms of sun damage are red and brown spots. These usually occur on the face, neck, chest and on the backs of the hands. There are many ways to treat red and brown spots. Two of the most common being the IPL or a photo facial of the ExcelV which is 532-nanometer laser.
How to choose the right treatment?
Patients often wonder which modality they should choose. The IPL/photo facial or the ExcelV. Let’s review the differences between the two and which one is right for you.
How does IPL work?
IPL stands for Intense Pulse Light and is referred to as a photo facial. IPL is a broad spectrum of light that is used to treat a lot of things it specifically tries to target red and brown, however, because it is a broad spectrum, of light it’s not specifically targeting anything.
What is the difference between IPL and ExcelV?
Overall, when comparing the ExcelV and the IPL, patients with sun damage in the form of red and brown spots would have more benefit from the ExcelV because it specifically targets the red and brown spots and it requires fewer treatments.
How many treatments are needed with ExcelV?
Usually with ExcelV only one treatment is necessary. However, if we are treating a large area like the chest occasionally two treatments are required.
What is the cost comparison for the two?
When comparing the cost of the IPL and the ExcelV, a single treatment with the IPL is less expensive than a single treatment with the ExcelV. However, with the IPL in order to see results you need to have typically between 3 and 6 treatments. Therefore the ExcelV is actually the more affordable choice because only one treatment is typically required.
