What is Endovenous Laser Ablation?
Endovenous Laser Ablation is the use of a laser inside your abnormal veins to shut them down and restore normal circulation in your legs.
What does Endovenous Laser Ablation treat?
Endovenous Laser Ablation is used to treat varicose veins. It is used to treat the main trunk or the stem of the varicose veins so the root of the problem is treated.
What type of laser is used for Endovenous Laser Ablation?
At the Skin & Vein Institute, we use a 1320 nanometer micro pulsed Nd: YAG laser to perform our endovenous laser ablation. This laser is superior to other lasers on the market because it does not penetrate the vein wall. Therefore, it does not damage the surrounding tissues, or nerves during the procedure.
Who can receive Endovenous Laser Ablation?
Anyone with varicose veins, which are those bulging ropey veins in the lower extremities that can be painful and sometimes cause swelling, is a candidate for Endovenous Laser Ablation.
Will insurance cover Endovenous Laser Ablation?
At times but not always, Endovenous Laser Ablation can be covered by medical insurance.
What must be done before the treatment?
Prior to treatment with Endovenous Laser Ablation, you will have an ultrasound, done at the Skin & Vein Institute to create a map of your veins and determine which veins are abnormal and qualify for laser treatment.
What should I know about the procedure and recovery?
On the day of your laser treatment, you will bring your compression stocking with you to the Skin & Vein Institute. When you arrive we will bring you back into the procedure room where you will have the ultrasound-guided laser procedure performed. We will then apply compression stocking and you will need to walk for an hour immediately after the procedure in the surrounding area, so make sure that you plan your day accordingly.
What will I need to do during the recovery time?
For the 3 days immediately after your Endovenous Laser Ablation, you will need to wear your compression stockings 24 hours a day. After those first 3 days, you will then wear the compression stockings for 10 days during the 12 hours that you’re awake.
Is Endovenous Laser Ablation safe?
Endovenous Laser Ablation when performed at the Skin & Vein Institute under ultrasound guidance is both safe and effective. It is a great way to remove your varicose veins and does not require hospitalization or surgery.
