Understanding reticular veins

Reticular veins are those seen on the legs that are blue and unsightly. They are larger than small spider veins, but smaller than the bulging ropy varicose veins often seen on the legs. Reticular veins can occur anywhere on the legs; however, they are typically on the backs of the legs, around the knees.

In most cases, reticular veins are unnecessary. However, it is important to have a problematic vein evaluated by a qualified physician. First, to determine what type of vein it is (spider, reticular or varicose) and second, to assess the functionality of vein. Evaluation by a qualified physician ensures that the veins treated are abnormal and therefore not essential to your circulatory system.

Can reticular veins be removed?

Reticular veins can be treated. The old method of stripping veins is no longer the standard of care, especially for these smaller, reticular veins.

Dr. Amanda Lloyd at Skin & Vein Institute Treated for reticular veins Treatment is painless and relatively noninvasive. It is well-tolerated and very effective for removing these blue, unappealing veins. The procedure follows these steps:
  • Reticular veins are generally treated with a sclerosing solution. This detergent-like solution is injected into a reticular vein. It causes a chemical reaction on the inside of the vein, making the vein wall sticky.
  • Then the vein is pressed together with external pressure. This is accomplished by wearing a compression stocking after treatment. Wearing the compression garment is critical because it prevents blood from refilling the faulty vein, and thus preventing sticky vein walls from staying adhered.
  • As the vein closes off, blood flow is redirected to healthy veins without defective valves. The treated vein is taken away by the body's natural healing processes.
Typically, patients require more than one treatment for full clearance, but it depends on the number of veins treated and how compliant the patient is with compression therapy.
