Beautiful Woman with Clean Fresh Skin

The beauty of cosmetic products & services

A youthful face has smooth and soft skin, well-defined features, an even tone, and a healthy glow. Lines, dark spots, leathery texture, dullness, sagging, and sunken features all contribute to an overall aged appearance. The march of time is to blame for the loss of collagen and elastin fibers that support tissues; however, this process is accelerated, and you may look older due to habits like tanning and smoking, which increase the breakdown of these essential proteins.

Tips to care and protect your skin explained by a dermatologist

Tips to care and protect your skin - Encinitas CA
Dr. Amanda Lloyd from Skin & Vein Institute Encinitas, CA recommends to use sunscreen with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as it is the most effective way to filter UVA and UVB rays. Wearing sunscreen every day even if it's cloudy and raining is highly recommended to protect your skin. Watch the video to learn more from the expert.
You must wear sunscreen every day no matter what, even if it is cloudy and raining UV penetrates the clouds so your skin is still being damaged even if the sun is not out.

What sunscreen do you wear? It must be broad-spectrum and has an SPF of at least 30. There are studies that show that SPF 50 blocks out two times more ultraviolet radiation than SPF 30 and SPF 30 blocks out four times more ultraviolet radiation than SPF 15.

The type of rays the SPF measures is the UVB ray that causes burning and does cause skin cancer. So it is important to block out UVB.

The sun's rays consist of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB). 95% of the sun's rays that hit the earth are UVA. UVA causes aging and skin cancer.

UVA and UVB damage the skin resulting in premature aging degradation of collagen create wrinkles and cause red-brown and white spots, brown spots.

Wearing broad-spectrum sunscreen is very important to block both UVA & UVB rays.

The SPF only tells you how effective the sunscreen is at blocking out UVB.

Therefore, you only know that sunscreen is effective against UVA when it says a broad spectrum on it, this is really important because you want a sunscreen that is effective against both UVA and UVB.

The physical sunscreens are made of inc oxide and titanium dioxide and are the most effective at filtering the UVA & UVB rays.

The more you can avoid the sun and its direct rays the better it is for your skin. You can use sunscreen, wear a broad-brimmed hat, stay in the shade or walk on the shady side of the street to avoid the sun.

See a board-certified dermatologist for your skin concerns as no other type of physician has the same degree of in-depth training in diagnosing and treating skin diseases.

Three Products that are Essential to your Skin Care Routine

Three Products that are Essential to your Skin Care Routine - Encinitas CA
Listen to Board-Certified Dermatologist Dr. Amanda Lloyd and Ms. Earth for 2018 Corinne Devin talk about the three products that are mandatory for any skincare routine – sunscreen, antioxidants, and moisturizer. They are essential in an area like California, where the harsh sunlight can damage the skin. Dry or oily, your skin needs these products.
Dr. Lloyd: I am Dr. Amanda Lloyd and I am here with Ms. Earth and we are going to talk about our favorite skin care products.

Ms. Devin: That’s right Dr. Lloyd. I am thrilled! I am Corrine Devin and I’m the 2018 current reigning Ms. Earth and I’m so excited to tell you about the things that make my skin look fantastic and fabulous for every video, photoshoot, appearance, you name it! Especially since Mother Nature cannot always be so kind on a day to day basis.

Dr. Lloyd: The first product that we are going to talk about today that is essential to everyone’s daily routine is sunscreen. We want to wear sunscreen because the UV rays damage the skin. They cause brown spots and red spots and can make you look old and tired when you are not old and tired!

Ms. Devin: Oh I could not agree more with that Amanda. Being blonde haired and blue eyes in southern California, the sun is like fertilizer for my skin. For me, my favorite product is EltaMD Clear. It comes in clear and tinted so, the days where I don’t have time to do full make up and I still want to have something but still know I’m protecting my skin. This product to me is a game changer. So the EltaMD Clear broad spectrum, again why do I want broad, you just said it before – UVA and UVB. SO guess what, 2 for the price of one, you can’t beat it.

Dr. Lloyd: I absolutely agree Corinne, having a sunscreen that is both tinted and clear for depending on what you’re wanting to do is really important.

Ms. Devin: it’s a game changer, it is such a game changer – in this world where you’re trying to do everything, whether you’re a mom, a business owner, or you’re running an empire and you need products that are not only god for you but are good for your skin and are going to last. So, what products do you find work great for you and a lot of your patients?

Dr. Lloyd: So my favorite sunscreen is the La Roche Posay mineral tinted sunscreen. I like the tint because I’m busy and I often don’t have time to put on makeup. So I just throw this on whether I’m going to work, going to play group, going to wherever and it’s got my skin good to go. It is broad spectrum, SPF50 and it covers me and my skin is protected from the sun. The second product that is essential to your skin care routine is an anti-oxidant.

Ms. Devin: Oh my gosh! Antioxidants! I hear everyone talking about antioxidants. What exactly is an antioxidant Dr. Lloyd?

Dr. Lloyd: Good question. So antioxidants are compounds that you put on your skin to protect it from the sun’s rays. The UV rays come down and hit your skin and cause free radicals which are like ping pong balls that bounce around and damage your collagen and elastin. This makes you look older, and more tired which you definitely don’t want. There are a lot of antioxidants out there but there are only 3 with some science behind them.

Ms. Devin: Lots of antioxidants, so many! I feel like my head is spinning. How do I know which ones I am supposed to even use? Where do I start? What are the best antioxidants that I should use for my skin and everyone should use for their skin?

Dr. Lloyd: So the 3 best ones, the three with the most data behind them are Vitamin C, Vitamin E and iron.

Ms. Devin: Okay.

Dr. Lloyd: Now you can find lots of pouts that have 2 or 1 or a combination of them. Vitamin C is a little bit tricky because it degrades when sunlight hits it. So you have to find one that is photo-stable. There is actually quite a lot to picking the product. But lucky for you, my favorite one is SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic. It smells a little bit odd but once you get used to that, it does a great job. It is photo-stable and it protects your skin from the sun.

Ms. Devin: Oh my gosh! This is great. Now, I have to tell you guys I have actually tried this one as a recommendation from dr. Lloyd and I got to tell you, guess what this smells like bacon. You’re thinking, wait a second bacon! But let’s be honest – who doesn’t love bacon on everything? I mean you put bacon on anything and it makes it so good! So putting something on my skin that smells like bacon may sound Cray but a little bit goes a long way and it isn’t actually bacon

Dr. Lloyd: Yes

Ms. Devin: I’ve noticed like a droplet goes a long way. This whole bottles, lasts me like 6 months.

Dr. Lloyd: It lasts quite a long time.

Ms. Devin: So yes it might be a little bit of a splurge but to me finding something that has everything versus buying multiple products.

Dr. Lloyd: Right, totally.

Ms. Devin: Trying to find each right ingredient, and then one may degrade another. Finding one product with all 3, that is huge.

Dr. Lloyd: Yep time saver.

Ms. Devin: Time saver. So again, this and a sunscreen. Is that all I need for day to day wear?

Dr. Lloyd: In the morning yes. That is all you need, an antioxidant and then your sunscreen and it’s tinted then you are good to go!

Ms. Devin: That’s fnatatic.as you can tell, she’s a busy woman on the go as am I as Ms. Earth and I got to tell you, for me that is such great advice to know. It only takes 2 products every day to start your day right.

Dr. Lloyd: So the third product is a night time product that is essential to your routine because you’ve got to hydrate while you sleep.

Ms. Devin: Why would I need to hydrate during my sleep? Isn’t me just throwing on anything on my skin better than nothing at all Dr. Lloyd?

Dr. Lloyd: Well something is better than nothing. But if you think of your skin as floaties on a pool, you want your lo floaties to be blown up and pretty because they sit so much nicer on the pool. Whereas, when they’re deflated, they are wrinkly and not as pretty. Your skin cells are like those floaties. why you hydrate overnight you’re replacing the hydration, the moisture, the ceramides, the fatty acids and all of the nice things that your skin needs to be plump and supple. It’s sinking in overnight, getting your skin ready to go for the next day.

Ms. Devin: So you are telling me that if I do a really great skin product, it’s like I’m giving myself my own personalized skin treatment every single night while I am sleeping?

Dr. Lloyd: Yes, exactly.

Ms. Devin: So that is fantastic because let’s be honest, how many of us get 8 hours of sleep or even 6? And you’re a mom so, I know unlikely.

Dr. Lloyd: Just a few.

Ms. Devin: Yeah, if they can work for the 6 hours that I’m sleeping, that is more than I’ve got during the day. What are some of the products that you recommend to your patient? Or products that you use that you find give you the most bang for your buck when you’re sleeping?

Dr. Lloyd: There are 2 moisturizers that I recommend, and it depends on whether or not your skin is oily or more dry. For the more oily patients, I love the Restorsea Rebalancing Lotion. It has moisture in it and it does a great job at rebalancing the skin. It’s got it in the name, it takes the dryness that has happened from the toxins, the wind and the life living.

Ms. Devin: Mother nature!

Dr. Lloyd: Yes

Ms. Devin: Which we can all tell, the struggle is real no matter where you live.

Dr. Lloyd: Exactly. It balances out the hydration. It has an enzyme called Aquabeatine XL which helps to gently exfoliate the dead skin cells off, to give your skin that healthy glow, and it hydrates it back to its normal balance look.

Ms. Devin: Okay, fantastic. I started using a product that you recommended; I have dry skin which makes me feel like I am going to be very withered. Let’s be honest, genetics is one thing but we all like looking refreshed, like we just got back from vacation, that we got that 8 hours of sleep, that we know really didn’t happen. For me, I have actually really enjoyed the SkinCeuticals Triple Lipid Restore Cream. What is in this product that you’ve found works so well for my skin being so dry that your recommend it for people like me with dry skin?

Dr. Lloyd: Yes the Triple Lipid is fabulous because it has like the name says, triple lipid. So, it has 3 lipids which really help to pull in and lock in the moisture.

Ms. Devin: Okay.

Dr. Lloyd: It also has ceramides and hyaluronic acid which help to hydrate the skin. It has some peptides which increase collagen and elastin production to improve fine lines and wrinkles. It is doing all of this while you’re sleeping at night, getting you ready for the next day.

Ms. Devin: You know that is such great news because as Ms. Earth, I am traveling to Morocco Africa, I am hiking Mt Etna I am living life to the fullest. It is great knowing that even though I am taking on Mother Nature, no matter what she throws our way, I’m still able to put something good and moisturizing on my skin at the end of the day. So I am ready for the next challenge.

Dr. Lloyd: Yes

Ms. Devin: That is fantastic!

Dr. Lloyd: With these 3 products: a sunscreen, an antioxidant and a moisturizer, that has got you set, Three things. A simple routine. Anybody can do it – it takes 5 minutes maximum.

Ms. Devin: I love it that is perfect for someone like me who is on the go and constantly travelling or working. This is fantastic especially since they also come in travel size!

Dr. Lloyd: Yes

Ms. Devin: Fantastic. That is perfect. I can’t say more about these products. I personally use them myself and as Ms. Earth I could not be more happy to recommend them. Thank you.

Dr. Lloyd: I recommend them as well. Thank you so much

Dr. Lloyd consults with you on healthy habits, professional anti-aging products that are both safe and are proven to work, and will suggest interventions that can be done to restore the health of the skin. In addition to an excellent medical-grade skin care routine, she may recommend cosmetic procedures to prevent existing lines from getting worse, or to improve the appearance of age-related signs. Both neuromodulators such as Botox and dermal fillers such as Juvéderm are injectable procedures used to combat the signs of aging. Botox is designed to relax the muscles responsible for creating the static wrinkles of the forehead, area between the eyebrows and around the eyes. Since Dr. Lloyd injects Botox very precisely into specific muscles, the results are natural and are tailored to your desired look.

The many dermal fillers on the market today are designed to improve the volume loss caused by aging in these common areas:
  • The apples of cheeks, to treat the sagging around the mouth
  • The lips, for augmentation and definition
  • The area around the mouth, to soften the marionette lines and turn up the corners of the mouth
Lasers and other light-based therapies are among the most versatile technologies available at the Skin & Vein Institute. The energy delivered by the lasers such as the Fraxel, Laser Genesis and Clear and Brilliant Original produces therapeutic heat in the skin which improves the appearance of sun damaged and lax skin, as well as acne, scars, and wrinkles by building collagen. Dr. Amanda Lloyd has lasers that produce these results with little to no downtime. She also has lasers, like the ExcelV, Fraxel Dual and Clear and Brilliant Permea to combat those pesky red spots and brown spots that accumulate on our skin over the years. Removal of these spots is virtually painless, and has very little to no downtime. Laser procedures are safe, effective, easy ways to reverse the signs of aging.

Dr. Amanda Lloyd also has lasers to treat those unwanted veins. Unfortunately, with aging, veins pop up in all kinds of places. The veins around the eyes become more noticeable, the veins on the nose become more prominent and spider veins develop on the legs. Thankfully, all of these, and more, can be treated with the lasers Dr. Lloyd has at the Skin & Vein Institute. Lasers are an excellent treatment option to improve the health of the skin, as they are safe, effective, there is little to no downtime, and no injections are required!
