Protect your skin from mask acne “maskne”
With the serious threat posed worldwide by COVID-19, masks have become an integral part of our lives. The World Health Organization has also issued guidelines on the importance of everyone wearing masks when out and about, to prevent the spread of this deadly virus.
Of course, we know how uncomfortable it is to wear masks all day long; they make us feel sweaty and stuffy, and a little difficult to breathe. They can also lead to acne breakouts, but since we’ll have to put up with them for a while, we might as well learn to adjust to them.
So, how do we prevent mask acne? Mask covered skin creates a hot and humid environment, which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria which leads to acne. Constant friction from the mask due to rubbing and grating against the skin can cause a condition known as acne mechanica.
Here are some steps you can take to prevent mask acne:
- Make sure your mask is clean and dry. Choose materials that won’t irritate your skin, and wash reusable masks properly.
- Use a good cleanser and moisturizer on the skin before putting on the mask.
- Clean the skin as soon as the mask comes off. Be gentle without over-exfoliating or over-drying the skin.
- Wear little or no makeup as it can clog pores and cross-contaminate between the mask and skin.
