The highest incidences of cancer in the USA occur in the skin. Estimates are that one out of five Americans will fall victim to skin cancer. The American Academy of Dermatology Association (AAD) says 9,500 cases of skin cancer are reported in the US every day.
Melanoma is responsible for the most number of skin cancer deaths with almost 20 deaths reported daily. It is estimated that 7,230 people: 4,740 men, and 2,490 women, will die of melanoma this year.
These facts are disturbing, however, most skin cancers can be cured if detected early and treated properly. Warning signs include changes in size, color or shape of a mole or other growth on the skin; eruption of new growths; or pimples that don’t heal. Regular skin self-checks will warn you of any changes in your body. The AAD says half of the melanomas are self-detected, which shows how important your self-skin check is in saving your life.
If you do notice any spots, moles or other growths that are new, different, changing, bleeding or itching, book an appointment with a Board-Certified Dermatologist like Dr. Amanda Lloyd.
Individual risk factors including skin type, family skin cancer history and history of sun exposure, will determine how often one needs to be checked by a board certified dermatologist. Those with a history of melanoma should make it a point to perform regular self-checks and have a full-body exam at least 2-4 times a year depending on when the melanoma was diagnosed.
Skin checks by a board certified dermatologist like Dr. Amanda Lloyd are an essential complement to your home routine. Not only will Dr. Lloyd screen for possible melanoma but she will also look for signs of too much sun and suggest ways to prevent skin cancer.
